Chapter Thirteen

Pulling the laden sulkies proved to be easier than any of them could have thought. It became apparent that someone had kept the wheels lubricated and in useable shape, and the harness leather turned out to be biothane and not leather at all. It looked like leather, felt like leather, but didn’t smell like leather. One person could have carried both sets of tack without the aid of the wheeled carts with no problem.

“I can’t help but wonder why one of you ladies isn’t riding,” Kenny said stepping out from behind a tree. “Seems to me the men should have been a little more courteous than making you walk.”

“Hold your tongue,” Willy puffed out from between the traces of the heavier wheeled training cart.

Sierra looked at Kenny and pushed him forward while reaching for his rifle, “Seems to me, you would want to step up and help an old guy. It looks like it’s heavy with all those bags on it.”

They all laughed when Willy let the traces sink to the ground in an exaggerated display of fatigue. “You’d certainly think so, wouldn’t you?”

With Kenny and Joe pulling the carts it didn’t take long to complete the trip to camp. There, Gina stared around at the separated piles of supplies. Someone had been busy, because their salvaged goods lay in neat piles ready to load.

“I thought we were going to have to come and rescue you, but Evelyn said you should be returning at any time.”

Only then did Gina see Sam walking toward her. “Hey, you’re back,” is what she said, but she realized her words understated what she actually felt. She sighed and walked over to him. “Good thing I didn’t have to come after you. I vote that from this day forward, we all stay together. No more of this splitting up.”

“Yes ma’am,” Sam said, slipping his arm around her shoulders. He looked down at her as he squeezed, “I guess you did miss me after all.”

“Did you catch up to him? Are we done looking over our shoulder?….. And I did!”

Gina knew when she felt him deflate that once again Silas had gotten away. She wished they had handled the situation the first time and she was sure that Ben and Sam felt the same way. As soon as Ben had told them the role Silas had decided to play right after the lights had gone out should have been enough to tell them he would be trouble in the future, but to be fair, they could never have foreseen the followers he had gathered along the way. For him to have only had the few men with him in the last attack made Gina wonder if he had fallen from grace, or if the remainder of his men now followed a new leader. “Or he’s run out of supporters,” she said softly. She started to pull away from Sam. Her intentions were to help with the loading of bags, but Sam held her tight.

“Wait just a minute,” he said for her ears only.
